Lara Stone goes Mary Poppins in this branded film directed by Alex Prager. We already featured the director with an earlier film, which, by then, won her “Best Artistic Direction” on the third edition of Diane Pernet’s Fashion Film Festival “A Shaded View On Fashion Film”. Well, that’s history.
Normally, we don’t goof on films we don’t like. Simply because fashion film is a field where many young professionals are making their first steps and most productions are hindered by small budgets and a lot of other compromises.
It’s a different thing with this film. There is a big budget, good talent, massive visibility… And we get a lousy idea, superstatic imagery, really, REALLY bad acting, not so impressive visual fx, … I could go on and on. Really, it’s a shame and a disgrace for the brands and the creatives involved with this film. Or would be, if you’d had any expectations regarding the creative level of this “fashion film” (and yeah, that also includes you, dear NOWNESS, once haven of the cool&avantgarde). I mean, why not, you can also aim for average. And branded average, that’s what this is.
To end this rant with a bright note, though: the coloring is quite outstanding.
Discovering “The Lake”, we stumbled over some really good works of Pierre Debusschere, a Belgium based photographer and film maker. His film “The Lake” features the beautiful actress Isild de Besco, who is by the way sister-in-law of well-known film producer Luc Besson. With every second Isild is experiencing the pureness of the clear water, she is merging with it more and more. Somehow forcefull and somehow very soft and delightful… But now feel free to form your own opinion and enjoy the film!

If two beautiful women are dancing ballet together in transparent luxe-gothic dresses, it is probably one of the most sensual sights ever. Award-winning director Barnaby Roper created right this, by casting dancers of The Royal Danish Ballet and clothing them with the latest autmn/winter collection by his wife and designer Camilla Staerck. What you get is a mixture between beauty and sensuality versus creepy creatures in fascinating motions. Enjoy!
Mexican directors Santiago and Mauricio Sierra show us an extremely aesthetic car crash in their film featuring the Louis Vuitton spring collection. The styling, the unbelievable hairstyling, the effects and the music fit perfectly and create a Lynch-like atmosphere between dream and reality. Even the slow motion in this fashion film actualy affects you. Wonderful.
Nowness celebrates its first birthday, as one can expect, with another masterpiece, called “Pauline”. Filmmaker Barnaby Roper, who has also crafted the facinating fashion film Iris, created a tableau of sliced images of model Pauline van der Cruysse. Each image is accompanied by a musical element, which all added together result in a symphony. The spectator can add, eliminate or enlarge each image in order to create his own symphony. But instead of just anticipating, try it out yourself!
